Response to Bishop Richard Malone on Conscience in a Catholic’s Life

© Frank O'Hara, January 15, 2010

Bishop Richard Malone wrote a column in the January-February issue of the Portland, Maine diocesan magazine Harvest about conscience.  In it he sets forth a very narrow view  of the role of conscience in a Catholic’s life. http://www.portlanddiocese.net/harvestcurrentpastissues. This response presents a broader view of the role of conscience.

From our Faith Tradition: Refutations to Bishops' Political Opinions

Response to the Bishop

This summer the Diocese of Portland (Maine) produced inserts that were placed in all Parish bulletins for 6 consecutive weeks. The Bishop used distortions of civil law cases, fears for parental rights, threats to public schools, etc. to scare people from supporting same-sex marriage. Each argument has been and continues to be used in any state where marriage equality is considered.  Below are responses by a Catholic lawyer to those inserts.

A Defense of Same-Sex Marriage, Prof. Daniel Mcguire

A Catholic Defense of Same Sex Marriage

Prof. Daniel C. Maguire

The Catholic Church is beginning to rediscover what it once knew; that not all persons are heterosexual, that many people are homosexual and that this is just fine. In the past, the Church accepted homosexuality more openly and even had liturgies to celebrate same sex unions.1 There was a recognition that different sexual orientations are clearly part of God's plan for creation-some people are heterosexual and some are homosexual-this is the way God made us and we have no right to criticize God.

Catholics for Marriage Equality Celebrates California Prop 8 Court Ruling

Catholics for Marriage Equality celebrates California Federal District Court Judge Vaughn Walker's ruling that barring same-sex couples from civil marriage is unconstitutional. He found, based on compelling evidence, that same-sex marriages are no different from heterosexual marriages in their potential for life-long loving bonds that produce, nurture and honor the family commitments central to our civic and religious ideals. The ruling clearly addresses only civil marriage rights and responsibilities. The Catholic Church retains its constitutional right to determine whose marriages it solemnizes  whose marriages it deems valid. It is time for our Catholic hierarchy to respect the constitutional rights of states and of other faith traditions to marry same-sex couples. Civil marriage is not within the ecclesiastical  jurisdiction of the Catholic hierarchy.
